Hey {{first_name}},

Most shop-bought sorbets and ice creams are a bit of a minefield.

Sneaky sweeteners, high fructose syrups, sometimes a whack of sorbitol or mannitol that'll have your gut grumbling before you've even finished the tub. Dessert shouldn't come with a side of regret.

This dessert is also perfect for the upcoming sunny hot days. It was actually a hot day that made me come up with this.

So here's my version. Four ingredients, no machine, no faff. Smooth, sharp, properly refreshing and built specifically for sensitive guts.

The best bit? There's solid research showing that eating 2 kiwis a day is genuinely effective for constipation relief, in some cases more effective than the supplements people spend a fortune on. So this isn't just a treat. It's a treat that quietly looks after you.

The recipe

Serves: 2

Prep time: 5 mins (plus 2 hours freezing)

Cook time: 0 mins

Ingredients:

  • 5 kiwis

  • 2 tsp maple syrup

  • 1 tsp lime juice (or half a lime juice)

  • pinch of salt

Method:

  • Cut the kiwi into small chunks (and take the skin off), roughly ½cm

  • Tip the chunks into a freezer bag and freeze for a minimum of 2 hours

  • Once frozen, blend the kiwi with the maple syrup, lime juice and a pinch of salt until smooth

  • Pour or scoop into a dish of your choosing and enjoy straight away

A quick tip. If your blender struggles with the frozen chunks, let them sit out for a couple of minutes to soften slightly, then blend. The pinch of salt isn't optional either, it lifts the sweetness and makes the whole thing taste like a proper dessert rather than just frozen fruit.

Why it works for your gut

Kiwi is one of the gut's best friends. Green kiwi is low FODMAP at around 2 fruit per serving, and the fibre plus the actinidin enzyme are what make it so good for keeping you regular. The maple syrup is a low FODMAP sweetener unlike honey, agave, golden syrup or anything ending in ol thats an artificial sweetener.

Make it yours

  • Swap the maple syrup for honey if fructose isn't a trigger for you

  • Add more maple syrup if you like it sweeter

  • Use gold kiwi instead of green if you prefer a sweeter, less sharp flavour

  • Throw in a squeeze more lime if you like it sharp

Have this as a light dessert or an afternoon snack. And if constipation is something you battle with, this is a genuinely tasty way to get a couple of kiwis in.
